Celexa Lawsuits
What is Celexa?
Celexa (Generic: citalopram) is an antidepressant medication in the class – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or SSRI. It has been approved by the FDA to treat depression and is also prescribed for a number of anxiety conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Celexa was originally manufactured in 1989 by Lundbeck, a pharmaceutical company.
Celexa’s patent expired in 2003, which allowed other companies to create generic versions of Celexa. Celexa is sold under various brand names in different parts of the world. Some of Celexa’s brand names include Celexa and Citalopram. Celexa is available in dosages of 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg tablets. Celexa is also available in 5mL dosages in a peppermint flavored oral solution.
Celexa and Pregnancy
Lately, there has been an increasing amount of information surfacing relating to the use of antidepressants such as Celexa during pregnancy. A recent study put out by the New England Journal of Medicine claims that the use of antidepressants like Celexa during all or part of pregnancy may significantly increase the risk of certain birth defects. The study suggests that taking Celexa and other antidepressants during all or part of pregnancy may increase the risk of birth defects by as much as 2-4 times the normal risk.
Some of the birth defects that have been linked with Celexa include persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), congenital heart defects such as septal defects and valve defects, congenital lung defects, cranial defects, clubfoot, gastroschisis and other abdominal wall defects. Scientists participating in the New England Journal of Medicine claimed that certain SSRI antidepressants such as Celexa may be responsible for doubling the risk of those types of birth defects when Celexa is taken during all or part of pregnancy.
At this time Celexa is a pregnancy category C drug, meaning that there has been some evidence of birth defects among animal testing, but there is not currently enough evidence of birth defects from human studies. However, the drug Paxil, which is in the same SSRI class of antidepressants as Celexa, was recently moved from a pregnancy class C drug to a pregnancy class D drug. Pregnancy class D drugs have shown evidence in human studies of an increased risk of birth defects. The FDA warns against taking pregnancy class D drugs while pregnant.
